Begins by admitting that neither frogs nor toads are 'very pretty or interesting creatures' but promises to 'mention some of the chief points of interest in these animals, avoiding, as far as possible, the use of scientific language, and, where it is absolutely necessary, explaining it'. Accordingly, details the physical characteristics and habits of frogs and toads. Dismisses several myths about these animals including the claim that the skin of the toad is poisonous and that they can 'spit fire'. (52) Emphasises the ease of taming and feeding toads and urges observation of their eating habits.

Begins with a discussion of various breeds of dog and warns that 'these breeds are entirely artificial, and if a number of dogs were left to themselves, the distinction of form and character would soon be obliterated, and in a few years we should find them undistinguishable from the wolf-like dogs that run wild in the East'. Insists that pigeon and poultry breeders, unlike dog breeders, produce animal varieties that are 'still useful to man'. Considers different breeds of rabbits, however, to be 'useless monstrosities, and only bred for the purpose of making them look as unlike rabbits as possible'. (83) Proceeds to a discussion of the features of the 'fancy rabbit', notably the ears and nose, and then advises on the best means of keeping rabbits. The illustration shows several varieties of the 'fancy rabbit'.

Explains how the 'example of other boys' caused him to rob birds' nests as a child, but that he stopped the habit once he realised that mother birds abandon eggs that have been stolen and returned. Ends with a poem urging boys not to steal birds' eggs. The illustrations show a boy up a tree, being attacked by two young birds, and a bird singing on a fence at the edge of a field.

Recalls the story of an old woman who was mocked and pelted with snowballs by young boys, but who later died tragically. Urges 'Boys of England' to be 'merciful to animals' and to 'remember that wherever God has given life you have no right wantonly to destroy it'. Distinguishes between killing animals for food and for sport and proceeds to condemn boys who torture insects and to praise the fact that 'In all well-conducted schools, the elements at least of natural history are taught, use is now made of the microscope, and lads learn the habits and nature of animal life'. Also relishes the fact that they 'see the wonderful design of the Creator in every part, and learn to admire what before they feared'. (227) Concludes by urging boys to abhor cruelty in any form.

Describes Faraday's early life, notably his apprenticeship to a bookbinder's, his reading of his 'master's books' which 'unlocked the chambers of his understanding' and 'opened before him the glorious prospect of science'. Emphasises how Faraday did not tire of experimenting with the crude chemical apparatus he was able to afford and, at 'lectures on natural philosophy', took notes and 'discovered happily that mental food requires digestion'. (260) Goes on to describe how Humphry Davy

Emphasises that Faraday was not merely a bottle-washer, but somebody who 'made himself invaluable by finding out work that needed doing'. Despite the fact that explosions almost injured him, Faraday enjoyed a 'glorious life', accompanying Davy to the Continent, and displaying a 'quiet, earnest way [...] of showing his humble trust in God'. Upholds his 'place in science' as a 'discoverer' rather than somebody who applied such discoveries 'to the practical uses of daily life', and notes that his work 'was that of mastering the mysteries of hidden forces'. Begins by noting two objections to killing insects: that 'we have no right to destroy needlessly' and that 'to kill an insect involves cruelty'. Attempts to deflect these criticisms by arguing that entomologists are 'never cruel' and that since we 'cannot employ our minds on a higher subject than that which is afforded by the works of our Creator', it is 'impossible to do so thoroughly without destroying life'. Furthermore, stresses that insects 'cannot feel pain as we do' and draws similar distinctions between insect and human life as bearing on cruelty and pain. (431) Proceeds to describe some of the best ways of killing insects.
The editorial argues that although some of Wood's statements 'may be new to some readers [...] such facts do not diminish the guilt of wanton cruelty or the needless destruction of life'.

Emphasising the fact that Smeaton always sought 'public happiness' and was 'never idle', describes how Smeaton devised his idea for the Eddystone Lighthouse. Notes the foul weather conditions under which the lighthouse was built, conditions that impeded progress. However, notes that the lighthouse was completed in 1759 with the motto 'Laus Deo' on its brow. Concludes by pointing out that 'steam pumps and steam tugs' could now accomplish Smeaton's task much more easily. (437)
