Begins by suggesting that 'from the number and tenour of letters received on the subject, the love of Natural History in some form is possessed by almost every one who is not devoid of intellect and observation. But very many of those who try to give practical effect to their wishes seem to fail at the very outset, and then are discouraged, and leave the study to others whom they believe to be more gifted than themselves' (3). Insists that this is especially the case with marine zoology and describes the typical experiences of a boy wishing to explore this topic on the shore, drawing attention to some of the wondrous botanical and zoological specimens that can be found in these locations. Advises on the best equipment and techniques for pursuing shore-hunting.

Describes the journey of Mr and Mrs Weldon to New Zealand. Includes the character of Cousin Benedict who accompanied the Weldons on their voyage, but who 'spent his whole time' on natural history, specifically on all the classes of 'articulata'—'the insecta, the myriapoda, the arachnida, the crustacea, the cirrhopoda, and the anelides'. Notes his inability to distinguish various species of this class, adding that he 'was an amateur entomologist, and nothing more'. Proceeds to describe entomology as a 'wide science', but points out that Cousin Benedict 'was an entomologist only in the limited sense of the popular acceptation of the word'—'an observer and collector of insects'. Despite the fact that Benedict was only interested in the insecta, stresses that this class comprises ten orders in which there are tens of thousands of species. Proceeds to describe some of Benedict's scientific habits including the pins that he carried about his person 'in readiness for the capture of specimens', and his tendency to guard his specimen box. (14) The illustration shows Benedict in his study—a bearded, bespectacled character at his desk where he inspects one of his insects with a magnifying glass. On the wall behind him are displays of his insects, while on his desk sits a pin cushion.

Notes how Wedgwood worked hard in the study of chemicals and new apparatus to improve the quality of cream-coloured ware. Also emphasises that his industry was 'incessant', that he loved truth 'in everything, great or small', that he was always 'modest and kind', and that 'His failures were stepping-stones to triumphs'. (165) The illustrations show Wedgwood as a middle-aged man, the young Wedgwood 'at the bench'.

Includes a detailed description of Cousin Benedict's exploration of a giant evacuated ant-hill where Benedict and his fellow travellers sought refuge after a severe African tempest. Benedict reports his discovery of the 'termites' "store-house"' (which was a receptacle for 'a considerable quantity of gum and vegetable juices') and attempts to interest his friends in the importance of the fact that the hills are deserted. (443) Later Benedict holds forth on the subject of termites, describing their classification, anatomy and habits, and emphasising the fierce ''sirafoos'' species of termite which frighten even the lion, and the immense fecundity of the female termite. The illustrations show the dark cavern where 'Cousin Benedict's curiosity was awakened', and the naturalist crouched on the floor of the cavern 'fairly mounted on a favourite hobby'—lecturing on entomology. Champions Verne as a 'household name with the boys of England—young and old', and as a writer of 'thrilling scientific romances' who 'knows everything', who 'seizes the latest scientific discovery, and weaves it so deftly in his magic web, that however wonderful it may have appeared or however far-fetched, it takes its place naturally in the daily routine of his little world of fancy'. Stresses further the range of Verne's scientific interests (from the 'depths of the ocean' to 'a journey to the moon'). (445) Proceeds to a short account of Verne's life, although it cannot account for his turn to 'writing a scientific romance', but suggests that this might have been caused by 'the progress which has been made in the sciences within recent years', which 'fired his strong imagination'. Lists several of his major works and proceeds to address the question of 'what use these scientific romances serve'. Replies by insisting that such works are 'directly beneficial' and satisfy 'the most exacting appetite for what is marvellous, whilst [Verne] opens before the minds of his readers possibilities of scientific triumphs that must make them think'. Also praises Verne's works for making 'the mere idler an object of contempt' and believes his portrait shows 'power and intelligence and purpose'. (446)
