The biographical narrative begins by noting that for many people 'the event of the month has been the placing of Miss Phillipa Garrett Fawcett, in the great contest of the mathematical year at Cambridge, "above the Senior Wrangler"' (17). Also details the education of 'the Lady Senior Wrangler' by her mother Millicent Fawcett, who has brought to the patriarchal world of politics 'a mind which may be called mathematical' and 'meets the Home Ruler with statistics of the cattle trade' (22).
