Familiar letters to Eugenia, who wishes to 'become a botanist', but, 'following Nature' in her books, is making slow progress. Observes that there can be no better introduction to botany than 'the pleasure excited by flowers'. (102) Introduces the taxonomic systems of Carl Linnaeus, Joseph P de Tournefort, and Antoine-L de Jussieu. Observes that, while Linnaeus's system 'may offer difficulties', the beginner 'derives from it the most satisfactory result' (103). Gives the Linnaean classification in some detail.
