Begins by giving advice on buying, using, and maintaining knives, and then describes some of the uses to which such an instrument can be put in 'Practical Natural History' (3). These include the examination of worms, the sea-mouse, vipers, centipedes, and glow-worms. The illustrations depict the sea-mouse, the mouth of a viper, and the glow-worm.
