    Describes the characteristics of some 'hidden animal life' to be found using a knife (22). These include wood-lice, spiders, various species of ant, gnats, beetles, and earwigs. The illustrations depict the soldier-ant, chambers of ants' nests, yellow ants' nests, a ground beetle, and a gnat alongside a caterpillar and chrysalis.
