    Introduces the protagonist, Captain Torres, a backwoodsman who is first seen reading a strangely worded document in the middle of the Peruvian forests. He is so engrossed in his reading that he is not distracted by the 'howling monkeys, which St. Hilaire has graphically compared to the axe of the woodman as he strikes the branches of the trees' (466).
