Prints a hand-written note for the unfinished novel Denis Duval in which the late William M Thackeray describes an unnamed 'seaman of the old school, whose hand was more familiar with the tar-brush than with Hadley's quadrant, who had peeped into the mysteries of navigation as laid down by J. Hamilton Moore, and who acquired an idea of the rattletraps and rigging of a ship through the famous illustrations which adorn the pages of Darcy Lever' (662).
