    It is reported that François de La Mothe Le Vayer, observing that Anaximander and others foretold earthquakes, asked the 'humorous question:—"If we consider the earth as a huge animal, had not these the art of feeling its pulse, and thereby of foreseeing the convulsions it would be troubled with?"
