    Reports that Francis Bacon (1st Viscount St Alban) 'thinks it the office of a physician to procure easy deaths as well as to restore health' (19). Benjamin Franklin is also quoted as stating: 'I look upon death [...] to be as necessary to our constitutions as sleep. We shall rise refreshed in the morning' (20).
