Complains that 'Father Thames' can no longer stand the 'burden' of the 'poor and dilapidated old pile'—Westminster Bridge—and that the cost of 'doctor's bills' for the bridge would have 'supported the whole family of metropolitan bridges in respectability'. The illustration and text portray the problems of navigating steamships through the only arch on the bridge that is large enough to take vessels.
