    The narrator, Stephen Witcher, describes how he went to 'Captain Poore, an order for to beg / For the Hospital at Winchester, to cure my dreadful leg'. Having gained Poore's permission to be sent to the care of 'Muster Mayo' (i.e. Herbert Mayo), he enjoyed excellent 'tendance and skill' at the hospital. Following an outbreak of 'erysip'las' he was sent home with Mayo's certificate requesting the 'Union Board' to provide the author with 'warmth and nourishment'.
