    Regards the 'Battle of the Lines' between the East Lancashire and the Lancashire and Yorkshire railway companies to be far worse than the 'Battle of the Gauges'. Reports that the Lancashire and Yorkshire company barricaded the line with timber and empty railway carriages but 'signalised the state of things' to prevent oncoming trains from colliding with the obstructions.
