Reports on George Gale's proposal to search for the explorer John Franklin in a balloon. Playing on the obvious meteorological connotations of the name 'Gale', the author imagines Gale suffering sub-zero temperatures and a balloon 'congealed into a flying iceberg' as he conducts his search. The illustration shows an airborne balloon covered with snow and with a smoking funnel poking out of the basket. |
