Describes arrival of the hippopotamus at the Zoological Society Gardens. Notes that its liquid intake consists of 'the usual wash of chalk, pump water, brains and other ingredients' that constitute London milk and that the animal displays 'extreme sensibility' and pines for its Arab keeper. Thinks that the animal, owing to its 'tendency to blubber', should be given the natural historical classification of 'Mammy-sick-alia'. The illustrations show people clamouring to see the hippopotamus.
