Playing on the ornithological connotation of Florence Nightingale's name, invites wounded soldiers in the Crimea to listen to the 'tale of the tender Nightingale' whose charm will ease their pain and who 'sings' medical treatments, including 'bandages and lint; salve and cerate without a stint', and 'fever's thirst allayed, and the bed you've tumbled, made'. The illustration shows Nightingale attending a wounded solider. |
