The Romance of Euclid

Anon

Genre:

News-Commentary, Drollery

Subjects:

Mathematics, Scientific Practitioners, Mental Illness

Questions the plausibility of a news report that James J Sylvester, professor of mathematics at the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, has 'passionate love' for mathematics, not least because it would mean that the mathematician would be 'jealous of every other clever individual who pays attention to the alleged object of his affection', and would involve him in 'writing odes to Problem 1' in Euclid.
