    Reports on Phineas T Barnum's invention of a gutta-percha machine enabling a safe descent of the Niagara Falls. Responding to a proposal to test the machine with a dog then with 'a Nigger or an Irishman', suggests choosing 'the patriotic John Mitchell' as the subject.
