    Discusses the case of Mr Croll, the proprietor of Croll's Metropolitan Alum Works on Bow Common, who has avoided proposals to deodorize his noxious gas-producing factory on the grounds that it is only 'one great nuisance among a variety of greater nuisances'. Advises Croll that to satisfy plaintiffs he should use the 'very liquor out of which he gets alum attended with foul exhalations' to produce 'exquisite scents' that 'shall over-power all offensive emanations'. Inhabitants of surrounding areas, it adds, 'will be only ready to die' in such perfumes.
