Notes the 'Considerable astonishment' caused by the announcement that several European countries have called on the 'Sublime Porte' (i.e. the government of the Ottoman Empire) to authorise the project of the canal promoter Ferdinand, vicomte de Lesseps 'for cutting through the Isthmus of Suez'. Explains that this 'would shorten the way to India' but complains that it is designed to 'destroy the greatness of England'.
