Taking its title from a magistrate's speech to Charles Babbage, this article claims that the latter's calculating engine 'has at last proved a failure' because it could not register the thickness of the skull of the magistrate who refused to fulfil Babbage's wish to remove the street musicians who had been plaguing him.
