A Would-be Auto da Fé

Genre: | News-Commentary, Drollery |
Subjects: | Spiritualism, Publishing, Religious Authority, Religion |
Discusses news that the Bishop of Barcelona, Antonio Palau y Termens, has consigned 'three hundred volumes' of publications on 'spiritual manifestations' to the flames. Adds that this act has rendered popery unpopular in Spain and inadvertently promoted spiritualism in that country. Suggests that the 'reverend prelate' should have undertaken the task more discreetly, and argues that in former centuries he would have burnt the authors of the works as 'necromancers and sorcerers'. |
