Punch to the Pitmen

Poonch

Genre:

Letter, Spoof

Subjects:

Human Species, Human Development, Animal Behaviour, Periodicals

Written in north-eastern dialect, discusses an Athenaeum report of the moral and intellectual superiority of Northumbrian pitmen and these miners' resentment towards 'Poonch' for representing them as 'nae better than savages'. Goes on to note the Athenaeum's description of Northumbrian miners' 'fondness' for 'timid' pets, such as canaries, a characteristic that allegedly shows Punch to be liar.
