The initial letter forms part of an illustration showing a satanic-looking figure dressed in a wizard's costume labelled 'ZADKIEL' (a reference to the astrologer Richard J Morrison). The figure waves a wand at a celestial object and is surrounded by small creatures. The text explains that Punch's Pocket Book for 1863 will contain a prediction of the recent earthquake, and thus demonstrate that 'THERE IS BUT ONE PUNCH, AND HE IS HIS OWN PROPHET'.
