    Beginning with the conventional assertion that the shoemaker's wife 'is always the worse shod woman in the world', the writer laments the fact that 'All the maritime nations of the earth are armed with iron-clads designed by, or after Cowper P Coles, and most built in British Dockyards', and that Britannia is even behind Brazil in 'naval armaments'.
