A Sample of Spirit Poetry (From our Superstitious Correspondent)
Anon
Genre: | Letter, Spoof |
Subjects: | Spiritualism |
Begins by presenting a sample of 'spirit-poetry', which the correspondent hopes will overcome even Mr Punch's 'inveterate' incredulity. Reveals that the poem is extracted from the Spiritual Magazine from which the author also quotes a letter explaining the difficulty with which the medium produced the poem. The author attributes the poor quality of the poem to the fact that it came from a 'low' spirit, an argument which he supports by suggesting that the poor quality of 'gravestone poetry' is likewise produced by 'illiterate spirits'. |
