Genre:

Utilitarianism, Disease, Medical Practitioners, Medical Treatment

The introduction explains that 'an extraordinary meeting' of the guardians of the Berwick Poor-Law Union recently considered the only reply to their advertisement for a medical officer and a porter, both of whom are to be poorly paid. In the spoof letter of application, 'An Apothecary' offers to undertake both roles, pointing out that he could not perform the medical officership alone on the low salary.
