Reports that Mrs Malaprop (a reference to the character in Richard B Sheridan's play, The Rivals) has responded to news that women can act as commissioners of sewers with the comment that 'she knows a great many poor seamstresses who would be very glad if ladies could give them work at better wages than they are now earning'.
