Comments on the British Medical Journal's report that the number of deaths from heart disease in middle-aged men is increasing. Therefore urges people to reduce 'muscular exertion' and 'anxious effort' in their lives. Not surprised by the statistics, since middle age is the period of 'man's struggle to maintain a wife and a family'. Links the increased incidence of heart disease to an increase in the price of 'feminine dress and ornamentation'. Urges men not to marry unless they can 'well afford it'.
