Notes that the First Commissioner of Works, Acton S Ayrton, considers his standing as a politician to be on a par with the standing as scientists of Charles Lyell, Thomas H Huxley, and James Paget. Questions why Ayrton is, accordingly, 'so low down the Government stairs'.
