The Pagoda Panic

Anon

Genre:

News-Commentary, Drollery

Subjects:

Botany, Societies, Astronomy, Observation

Regrets the appearance 'in the market' of the Pagoda, a 'pile of British deal', formerly given to the British Association for the Advancement of Science. Notes that it was given to the association to enable it to pursue 'astronomical researches', in order to give it 'a fixed address to put on its cards', and to 'take away the appearance of vagabondism with which its having no "local habitation" to add to its name had invested it'. Adds that the tree was so rotten that an astronomer could not climb it 'to look after the stars'.
