A Railway from Oxford to Rome

[Douglas W Jerrold] *

Genre:

Reportage, Spoof

Subjects:

Railways, Transport, Universities, Religion

A satirical comment on John H Newman, the University of Oxford theologian who had recently converted to Roman Catholicism. Reports that the prospectus for the Oxford-Rome scheme that is shortly to appear will be supported by Pope Pius IX. Notes that the 'route has already been marked out by some well-known tracts of late travellers'—a pun on the title of Newman's Tract XC.
