Punch,  9 (1845), 14.

A Pump and a Well

Anon

Genre:

News-Commentary, Drollery

Subjects:

Societies, Scientific Practitioners

Notes that members of the British Association for the Advancement of Science style themselves 'pumps' and ponders a paper by one such pump, Rev. T Rankin, on a 'deep well'. Suggests that 'scientific minds' would make ridiculous observations about the well, such as 'I wonder how deep the water is'.
