    As the example of the Yorkshire College in Leeds shows, lantern slides are of enormous benefit to lectures in subjects such as 'Engineering, Dyeing, and the Textile Industries'. In particular, they can be used in lectures on biology that are 'illustrated by micro-photographs'. In fact, 'So convenient and successful has the plan proved that the microscope is rarely used for lecture illustrations, but is relegated to its proper place in the laboratory'.
