Observes that William M Conway 'does not look down with scorn upon the tourist; on the contrary, he thinks the tourist is an invaluable ally of the scientific investigator'. If only 'summer travellers could be induced to visit' Spitsbergen, then, as has happened with the Alps, 'it might be possible to get a portion of the Arctic land minutely studied and exactly surveyed'.
