    In the view of the Dutch, the University of Oxford and University of Cambridge are 'survivals of an effete medi√¶valism' and cannot compete with institutions on the Continent, 'especially Dutch and German universities'. The principal cause of the rooted 'conservatism' of Oxbridge is the 'disastrous [...] absence of state interference'.
