In the view of the Dutch, the University of Oxford and University of Cambridge are 'survivals of an effete mediævalism' and cannot compete with institutions on the Continent, 'especially Dutch and German universities'. The principal cause of the rooted 'conservatism' of Oxbridge is the 'disastrous [...] absence of state interference'.
